TE Connectivity Systems ( TE ) introduces the second-generation PARALIGHT QSFP + active Fiber Optic Cable assembly, which saves customers significant power and cost through a fully integrated optical engine. Compared to its predecessor, this optical engine has lower power and cost, higher performance, and is more competitively priced than its predecessor.

The new product line is designed for internal optical termination, eliminating the need to clean optical connectors. The cable is environmentally friendly with passive cooling, with a low thermal resistance path from the chip to the connector housing, saving more operating costs. Another benefit of the second-generation PARALIGHT QSFP + active cable is the improved cable management through lightweight design of the cable, 3.0mm small diameter and tight bend radius.

This second-generation fiber optic cable consists of four transmit channels and four receive channels at 10 Gbps for InfiniBand standard SDR, DDR and QDR applications. The fiber optic Cable Assembly uses 850 nm VCSEL technology at 2.5 Gbps to 10 Gbps per channel for a total data rate of 40 Gbps. The fiber optic cable integrates electro-optical and photo-electrical conversion in the connector housing, which significantly improves the space utilization of the PCB substrate.

The cable assembly uses 50 micron core fiber lengths up to 100 meters and is available in longer specifications upon request. Its EOE circuit design uses 8B/10B encoded data streams such as Infiniband, Fibre Channel and XAUI. The QSFP connector model supports an I2C serial interface that can be used to identify products and performance.

Product applications include: high-speed interconnects within and between switches and transport equipment; server-server clusters; supercomputing interconnects; cabinet-to-cabinet, rack-to-rack, board-to-board, and board-to-optical backplane interconnects. This active Optical Cable complies with the differential I/O standard of the InifiniBand specification (version 1.2.1).
